While it might not be ideal to get laid off at work, single mothers and families on a limited income may be able to benefit from the Unemployment Insurance program if they are unemployed due to no fault of their own.
On this page we’ll be discussing the basics of the program, showing you what benefits it can hold, and guiding you through the process of applying for aid by submitting a UI claim.
Unemployment Benefits Overview:
The Unemployment Insurance Program might be able to pay you money if you are a single mother that has become unemployed due to no fault of your own and you meet the eligibility requirements that have been set under the state law.
All benefits that are paid out as unemployment claims are taxable, which means that you will have to declare all benefits that you have received as part of your income tax return. You’ll receive unemployment benefits from the State that you were employed in, and as such, the State decides if you are eligible for benefits and they also determine how much you qualify for.

Your state might vary the number of weeks you can receive benefits based on the period of time that you were previously employed for. Your past earnings also help determine the amount of benefits you’ll receive on a weekly basis. A maximum of 26 weeks is set as UI standards for which workers are eligible for support.
Unemployment benefits are usually paid at around $300 per week, although this varies from state to state and from one individual to another depending on previous earnings. State law aims to replace half of your previous earnings, which once again varies from roughly 33.9% of earnings in Alaska, to about 54.3% of earnings in Hawaii.
